Self-Represented Legal Support

Some individuals have very simple financial circumstances without children, child or spousal support, or believe they have reached a fair agreement with their spouse and have no reason to go to court. Others simply want to keep costs down.

Increasingly, these parties are attempting to navigate the justice system without formally retaining a lawyer from beginning to end.

While deciding important divorce issues on your own may be tempting, we have found that many self-represented parties can benefit significantly from early legal advice and direction. As a wise man once said, “you don’t know what you don’t know.”

If you are negotiating a settlement without legal advice consider that it may not be legally binding without that advice. If your plan is to negotiate your deal and get a lawyer to simply witness it, it still runs the strong risk of not being enforceable. Plus, a lawyer signing as a witness is no advantage over any other witness and most lawyers will only witness an agreement they have reviewed and given advice on. If your goal is an enforceable, binding agreement you can rely on, you need legal advice at least at the point of signing it.

The problem with waiting for that point is that once you have sound advice you may throw the whole thing away and have to go back to the drawing board.

We can help you with:

  • A case assessment tailored to your specific needs and circumstances
  • Document assistance (e.g., drafting affidavits, applications, Statements of Claim and other court documents)
  • Referrals to financial or parenting experts
  • Legal research
  • Advice about court and other legal processes
  • Strategy in and out of court

Failing to consider all of the issues when it comes to rights and responsibilities like property division, support, finances or parenting arrangements may cost you heavily in the long run. The good news is that you can limit a lawyer’s involvement and the cost very significantly.

Whether you need direction at the beginning or middle of your separation process, we can help point you in the right direction without you having to sign on to any legal assistance you feel you do not need or cannot afford.
