If you are negotiating a settlement without legal advice consider that it may not be legally binding without that advice. If your plan is to negotiate your deal and get a lawyer to simply witness it, it still runs the strong risk of not being enforceable. Plus, a lawyer signing as a witness is no advantage over any other witness and most lawyers will only witness an agreement they have reviewed and given advice on. If your goal is an enforceable, binding agreement you can rely on, you need legal advice at least at the point of signing it.
The problem with waiting for that point is that once you have sound advice you may throw the whole thing away and have to go back to the drawing board.
