Kevin E. Hannah, LLB
Kevin is an experienced lawyer who has practiced family law exclusively for over 20 years with earlier criminal and general litigation experience. From the first year Canada recognized its “Best Lawyers” he has been voted a best lawyer in Calgary every year since by his peers. He now divides his work between private clients who require more experienced counsel and conducting mediations and arbitrations for other lawyers and their clients. Although his preference for clients is always a negotiated outcome his litigation experience is extensive.
His goal for clients is to secure a resolution to their divorce or related matters that is based on their needs and informed by the law. He recognizes that a significant interest of many is to avoid an adversarial process that can create rather than solve problems and that can damage families. While some lawyers offer the promise of “winning” or obtaining the best possible outcome for their clients Kevin appreciates that when both lawyers pursue this goal the result is often very costly financially and personally. In most cases where a win/lose approach is taken the outcome falls far short of what was promised. Recognizing that most people are looking for a resolution that is reasonable and fair, as opposed to a “victory”, he attempts to balance their needs with the needs of their spouse and children in order to design a result that will work and last. This, in a nutshell, is a collaborative divorce.
Kevin finds complicated financial issues especially interesting and has adjusted his practice to be able to provide better service to a smaller number of clients. He has selectively partnered in certain complicated litigation cases with Ms. April Grosse, a very capable and experienced litigation lawyer with the national law firm, Bennett Jones.
Teaching the law and its practice to other lawyers, law students and legal professionals through lectures, papers and seminars, including through the Legal Education Society of Alberta will continue to be a priority for Kevin. He has written numerous articles in the Lawyers Weekly, a national publication, and has volunteered on several boards and with several organizations, including the Association of Collaborative Professionals of Calgary, the Dispute Resolution Office at the Calgary Courthouse and Calgary Legal Guidance, providing free legal advice to those with limited means.
