Kevin Hannah, K.C.

Kevin Hannah K.C. is a senior divorce lawyer with previous criminal law and general litigation experience. He has practiced almost exclusively in the areas of separation and divorce for 30 years.

He divides his work between a limited number of private clients who require more experienced counsel but primarily acts as a mediator and arbitrator (private judge) for other lawyers and their clients. In 2020 he was given the Dr. John Haynes Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to family mediation.

Kevin recognizes that an important goal of many clients is to avoid an adversarial process that can create rather than solve problems and that can destroy families in the process. His many years in court have ultimately taught him that court or arbitration should be the last resort. In most cases there are better ways to resolve disputes.

Although the goal in the majority of cases is to find a resolution to which both parties can say “yes”, Kevin appreciates that in a small number of cases a settlement is simply not possible. Where litigation is necessary, he enjoys the challenge of contested hearings and is advantaged by his years of arbitrating for others. For a number of years he had many consecutive wins in the Manitoba and Alberta Courts of Appeal.

Kevin has been recognized by his peers and listed in Best Lawyers as one of the leading family lawyers in the city of Calgary every year since its inception in 2006. In 2014 and again in 2021 Kevin was named “Lawyer of the Year” in family law. Since 2011, he has also been recognized each year by Best Lawyers as a leading ADR (alternative dispute resolution) lawyer for his work in divorce mediation and arbitration.

Other peer review organizations (i.e., those listing lawyers based on private voting by other lawyers) in which he is recognized as a leading family lawyer and mediator include the Lexpert Legal Directory and Doyles Leading Family and Divorce Lawyers.

In 2018 when the government of Alberta was revising its legislation on sharing property following divorce or separation Kevin was retained to advise the Minister of Justice on the changes.

Kevin has taught and spoken on family law topics many times to other lawyers, law students (guest lecturer at University of Calgary Law School) and legal professionals through lectures, papers and seminars, including many presentations through the Legal Education Society of Alberta.

He has written family law articles in Lawyers Weekly and has volunteered on several law-related boards. He has also volunteered for several years with Calgary Legal Guidance, providing free legal advice to those with limited means.
