Gay Benns
Gay recognizes that divorce and separation can be a very difficult time in the lives of the people involved and it is important that they receive guidance through that process in a way that supports their family. Gay sees her role is as legal advocate and to empower individuals to make their own decisions. Gay ‘s approach is forthright and practical. Resolutions are as unique and varied as the families that we work with. There are opportunities to find creative solutions that work for each family either through collaboration, mediation or litigation if all else fails.
Gay is a collaborative lawyer and a mediator. She has appeared extensively in all levels of court in Alberta. She is a Dispute Resolution Officer in the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta. Gay received her BA from the University of Winnipeg and her LLB from the University of Manitoba. She was called to the Bar in Manitoba in 1998 and Alberta in 2002.
Gay is an instructor with the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education ( formerly known as the Bar Admission Program). She has taught both interviewing skills and negotiation skills to the Bar admission students. She has also assisted at the University of Calgary teaching these same skills to first year law students. She has presented for the Legal Education Society of Alberta and volunteers with the Calgary Legal Guidance Clinic. Gay is a volunteer lawyer for the Children’s Legal Education and Resource Centre, providing representation to children involved in legal proceedings and assisting in presentations to the staff at the Sherriff King Home. Gay’s community volunteer activities have included extensive community and school involvement.
Gay is married and has two children.
